Life for me is about seasons and learning to flow not only with those seasons of times but also the current of energy that comes along. Now that Kevin is back on a ship we have discovered that our life has begun a new season. This has brought a new rise and shine time of 3:30 AM.
I’ll give you a minute to process that…
Yep, I see your eyes bulging outta your head as you read the time over and over to make sure you are seeing it correctly with the snappy “Say wwwhhhat? Oh hell no!”(make sure to include a southern drawl with that.) It’s okay, every now and again I hear that same comment floating through my head as well, but as I remind myself it isn’t forever…just a for the next 18 months. So, the alarm clock goes off at 3:30 AM and we both wake up in order for Kevin to get on the road and be at his desk by 5 AM to begin his fantastic Navy day! Woo-hoo!!!
You are probably wondering why I am up so early since I don’t have to be at work at the crack of dawn. I could roll over and go back to sleep until 5 AM once Kevin got up, and when the kids were younger, like toddler age, I did fall back asleep until they started to stir mainly because I was running on fumes already. If I made the choice now to sleep I’d miss making Kevin fresh coffee, having a chat and sending him to begin his day with a kiss and a smile. Some of you may see this as a “Leave it to Beaver” when I say that those few stolen moments fills my heart for day. A small shift has created a wonderful impact on our lives and a small marital bliss hack that we have discovered is when we are on the same sleep pattern it helps us maintain better communication and connection as a couple and that is important especially when we, a military family, spends so much time apart.
The bonus for me, and what I love about getting up so early is that I have quiet time!!! No kids, including the animals who settle back to sleep once Kevin is out the door leaving me to my own devices so I can write, meditate, or walk the dog at sunrise. I am getting into habit of writing and since I am a morning person writing at dawn comes more naturally for me. It is time to complete all the articles that I have started and work on the book that keeps bubbling up.
Truth be told our feet don’t hit the floor exactly at 3:30 AM when the alarm goes off, but by 3:50 AM our feet are on the floor and our day begins. Those first 20 minutes are appreciated and used to center ourselves for the day. We both do it a bit differently, I begin with gratitude. As my Grampa would say “I’m thankful to be on this side of the dirt.” He had a great way with words. I use a little more finesse and begin with being present in my physical being and then focus on various parts of my body beginning with my feet. I think of this as my wake up body scan.
I begin by taking a deep clearing breath and gently wiggle my toes, then I make small circles with my ankles in order to call my blood flow to my feet and I take a moment to feel the strength in all the small muscles in my feet and ankle thanking them for that power to support me through my day. As my feet wake up I gently shake my legs, and wiggle my butt cheeks grounding myself further into day. As I scanning my body, I thank it for being in good health. When I reach my heart I take a moment to be grateful for the important people in my life, breathing in gratitude and exhaling love. Since I am a color person as I am going through this process I visualize different color as I move though my body. Most of the colors simply correlate to the chakras…most importantly they all have SPARKLES! My philosophy is that everything is better with sparkles. By this time it is time to sit up and get serious about hitting the deck so once I sit up I focus on rolling my shoulders backwards and forwards gently and move my head side to side giving the joints time to wake up. Then with a final deep breath I smile, because every day should begin with a smile. A smile on my face, a smile in my heart and a smile for those who will make my day. In those moments I choose to embrace the greatness of the day ahead and I ask the question… “What grand and glorious adventure will we create today? And how much better will that get?”
This process only takes a couple of minutes but it makes a massive difference to my day and I have discovered over the years that it makes a difference on my husband’s day as well even though he may not do what I do, the results of my practice has rubbed off on him. How do I know? Because we both thank one another for choosing each other…far more powerful than just an “I love you”. When he leaves he is far more in tune with his physical presence and surroundings than he once was, taking time to notice small things like the flowers in the garden, the phase Grandmother Moon is in on his way to work, animals he sees from the corner of his eyes dashing into the wooded areas around our home and he takes the time to let me know if I should go out to look at the early morning sky myself.
It is amazing what the act of being present from the moment you wake can do for the rest of your day. Giving yourself the gift to connect with the moment you are in is incredibly rewarding. It really does save time because you are able to stay focused more readily and ride the wave of life. I broke down my wake up ritual to five steps for those who might want to give it a go. Here is what you can do to begin your own morning ritual to create a positive day every day.
Keep is simple:
Choosing to have a great day doesn’t mean that challenges don’t appear, or your kids won’t drive you nuts, but it does mean as things come up you are better prepared to stay in the flow and deal with what comes up with ease.
Give it a go for a couple of days and come back here to share your experiences, and remember to be the BEST version of yourself each and every day.
