When I began down the path of consciences the first thing that I needed to work on for myself was learning how to ground my energy. My physical energy and emotional energy ran so high and in several direction, rarely together, that I felt as though I was running my life with laundry lists to check off and events to survive. I wasn’t living…I was surviving, not thriving. I needed to focus on being in the present so I could embrace all the wonderful experiences my life had to offer, rather than living from one check lists to another. It became crystal clear to me when I got sick at the end of summer right after the kids went back to school about 7 years ago. I had been exercising daily, eating very well and our kids had a fantastic summer full of camps. All was right in the world…but I got sick. I got really sick a couple of weeks into the school year. It was my energy vibration.
That was about the same time I became VERY aware of other peoples energy around me. I could walk into a room and tell you how each person felt. It was incredibly exhausting. It was also extremely painful at times since I felt the weight of the world on my shoulders. Something had to change.
I need to connect to the planet, so I could connect to myself. I walked or ran daily outside among the trees and near water, however I needed to do it with intent. I began by focusing on the trees as I walked. I would watch them move with the breeze. I’d listen to them speak…it is amazing what you hear when you listen to the leaves rustle and the branches creek. Then I started watching the sky. I’d look at the clouds, the colors, the birds…whatever was in line of sight. The more I focused on what was happening around me the more present I felt. I opened up to the possibilities around me and connect to what really is important discovering that it actually made me feel better.
It took practice each day to connect to what was happening around me.
Shortly after that I learned a grounding meditation that anchored me into Mama Earth like the great white oak…Wow! I didn’t realize how fantastic I could feel. I liken it to spending a day at a quiet beach laying in the sand and burying feet deep, as I reach my hand in the water permitting the ocean to flow over my outstretched arm, with the wind sweeping across my body and the sun kissing my face. It is very intense… but in a positive way and one you just don’t forget.
Once I learned that grounding meditation and practiced it daily I realized that there was nothing I couldn’t do. I was able to find a balance in my life that I hadn’t had since I was a child playing on the shore of the West Bay. Life rocketed after that… I knew that there was something greater and deeper that I needed to do and grounding was going to show me.
It will show you as well… there are 7 simple and quick ways that you can begin grounding right now.
Taking time to ground may sound like another thing to do on what seems like an endless list each day, but using the few minutes that it takes actually gives you more time because it gives you clarity, focus, balance, presence and health. Give it a try…remember you are worth more than a “things to do” list.

Last but not least…my true understanding and passion…
Kids gravitate to crystals like ducks take to water. Some people get all hinky when it comes to the SPARKLY power of crystals, and that blows me away since crystals are gifts from Mama Earth created to assist us. AND… we use them all over our tech industry whether or not we are aware of it, so why not use their vibe with awareness. Without making this sound too much like my Crystal 101 Workshop or my Crystals for Kids Workshop I’m going to share a couple of my favorite things to do with crystals that have really helped our kids, especially now that they are teens.
Before I dive into the crystal world I want to take this moment to point out that everything that I am sharing is what has been working for me and my family. I am sharing what works for us because I have learned over time that it has been open conversations, expanding possibilities and experimenting that has helped me discover what works for us. Sometimes, as with all experiments, I have had failed…but it’s okay, because I keep in mind that Thomas Edison created many failed light bulbs before he found the right recipe to make it work. That is the way life goes. I also am not a child expert, although I believe most parents qualify as an “expert” of their child/children. As I’ve walked this path of self-discovery I have remained open and kept myself open to all possibilities and opportunities that encourage personal growth. That is one of the reasons all three of my kids and my husband jumped 192 meter off the Auckland Tower last month… it was a leap of faith and something that proved to each of them that there is NOTHING that they can't accomplish is that put their fears and self doubts aside.
If anything I have shared, or ever share, doesn’t feel right to you I invite you NOT to try it. If is peeks your interest…give it is whirl, but make sure you do your own research to see what works for you.
Now to the good stuff…
I know it is every mother’s dream to have their kid’s bedroom’s cleaned, their laundry put away and in general all their belongings picked up. I wish I could say that all my fab tips for HAPPY, HEALTHY and ENERGETIC TEENS meant that the kid’s bedrooms were always clean, with bath towels hung and doors never slammed but alas I can’t, those are still things I have to remind them about constantly. As I have learned in “Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff” it is the whole picture that matters rather than the things we can laser focus on especially when it comes to our kids. The other important lesson having kids has taught me is that the things I focus on with them is basically a direct reflection of my own faults. So, I have worked on being a bit more compassionate with them, my hubby and mostly myself...crystals have helped greatly.
Introducing crystals into the family home is easy as 1, 2, 3. I recommend bringing Orange Calcite into the family living space. I bought a pound of raw pieces and placed them in a bowl in our living room. At first the kids didn’t notice them but once they did see them they started playing with the pieces. The novelty of them soon wore off but the energy in that area shifted. Like with the Himalayan Salt lights a calm presence was felt in the living space creating a sense of relaxation and peace for all of us. This is very important before and after school.
Who loves homework? Come on now…isn’t that the BEST part of the day?
Alright, homework time was AWFUL…I found myself getting all stressed out about getting homework done but knew that we needed a system. The habit we created was that the kids would get off the bus, have a snack and then complete their homework. Believe it or not it was a bowl of crystal chips on the table that really created a powerful impact for my kids homework habits because when they got/get all frustrated they run the crystals through their fingers while focusing on their breathing.
That simple action worked wonders. Truth be told about my “Bowl of Wonder” EVERYONE uses it; kids, hubby, friends, clients and students. I have a friend who stops by just to play in my bowl of crystal chips. It is FAB!!!
Focus is another big thing for kids and teens, so I created a mojo bag of crystals for the kids to carry with them in their pocket. As their needs shift and change we change the crystals to best suite their needs.
Now, I could write a book on the crystals we have used and for what reasons when it has come to my kids but overall it is about discovering what your needs are and using what is best for the situation. When I was personalizing crystals for each of my children I created a bowl for each of them to keep by their bed and it was marvelous since they each could then learn to sense what they needed most at that moment. Even today they each have their personal crystals in their rooms that they pull from should they need a little extra boost.

The other night my daughter, 14 years old, pulled up a site we used every night for years but had kinda been placed on the back burner since our move to Australia. The site is FragrantHeart.com, the creator Elisabeth Blaikie is fabulous and has created guided meditations that my kids and I have used for years.
BONUS TIP is meditation...
If you teach your children how to connect with themselves you have given them a gift far more valuable that diamonds, gold or even fame, because they will always know where they need to be to find their center. Find their inner peace. Connect back to their soul.

Being a parent has its challenges and I am not hear to preach about what we live, even though it is awesome to know that we are not alone on the parent front. Learning a couple of tools that you can have in your Mama Bear and Papa Bear toolbox is handy, especially items that pack a punch without much effort beyond using them.
I have been using essential oils since before I got pregnant with our first son. I had read some really neat articles in the early 90’s about the benefits of oils and really put them into use when we moved to Italy. I was wanting to create natural face and body washes and lotions because I couldn’t find anything on the market that I liked. What started out as self-care interest soon turned into a greater desire to learn more. When we decided to start having children I turned to herbs and essential oils to assist in the process, discovering what really made me relax. It was great!!!
Then my baby came along and I forgot everything… I became consumed with items on them market rather than following what I had been doing for the previous two years. Yes, it happens to the best of us. It took my second son to come along to help my brain remember to use essential oils. When I began using them again it was in the boys’ bath at night.
O.M.G… What a MAJOR difference it made to bedtime. We had a calmer bedtime routine that created minimal stress. I LOVE IT!!!

I wish I could say I didn’t forget to connect to the fantastic energy that using oils brought into the house once again but I did when we moved to Virginia. The flow became stagnant and bed time became a difficult trudge once more and by this time we added our daughter to the mix. The "witching hour" was multiplied by 3 and made me tired, cranky and ready for bed by 8 pm each night. Ugh… not fun! You would think I would have learned but I didn't. This time it took a few years of walking around half asleep and unable to see the possibilities. Oh boy, we all have lessons to learn and here I was at the threshold of hell all because I forgot the power of smell.
As with most lightworker’s walking in a fog I forgot my basics when it came to living life and especially when it came to parenting…life just got in the way and the white noise just kept coming from all directions. Rather than expanding to enjoy and embrace life I was crumbling inside. On the outside I looked perfectly normal, all put together, physically fit, but inside I was struggling to find inner peace all because I was focused on the wrong thing. Thankfully I snapped out of my fog and began to connect to what really mattered to me...
It wasn’t until my friend reminded me of Frankincense that it clicked… “Hey, I’m missing something in our routine here, but what is it?” that it actually dawned on me and my AH-HA moment occurred. A couple of days later I was at the A.R.E. Edgar Casey Foundation in Virginia Beach, browsing through their store, that a most beautiful scent caught my attention. It was the most fabulous incense EVER!
(Archangel Incense - Natural incense) I immediately picked up 2 packages and drove home like a bat outta hell so I could burn these luscious sticks. I remember the kids walking in from the bus all buzzy with school energy and watching them melt into a calm and relaxed state. It was heaven!!! My “witching hour” was no more…screaming and shouting turned into giggles and laughter. The kids went from being overwhelmed balls of energy to calm and happy kids. It was, and is, FANTASTIC. Over time I moved from incense back to essential oils, mainly because oils lets me create and I LOVE to create!
My second MUST HAVE is just as simple as the first…
Oil diffuser with essential oil....
Not all essential oils are created equally and one of the things I have learned over the years is you get what you pay for and it became more and more clear to me the deeper I dove into learning how to use the essential oils in all aspects of my family’s and client’s lives. Since I use oils in different ways I invest in high quality essential oils. Over the years I have learned that some oils are best used internally while others need carrier oils to be applied topically. Don’t let it discourage you from introducing essential oils into your home. Using a diffuser is the easiest and most effect way to get start. The diffuser I currently have downstairs runs for 6 hours and has and LED light that changes color. The colors bring another layer of awesomeness in to the house. Upstairs we have the diffuser that came with the doTERRA kit that I got, it too runs for about 6 hours. Depending on what energetic vibration needs to occur where usually depends on the oils I run in the diffuser.
Here are a couple of recipes I use for the kids that really helps to keep them happy and smiling. In the morning we put in uplifting essential oils into the diffuser to assist with getting everyone out of bed. ‘Rise and Shine’, as my husband loves to sing. During homework time we have oils for focus and calming since school is pretty full on for them. At night, after dinner I change things up a bit to get our minds and bodies ready for bed and run a sleepy time recipe that really helps everyone to sleep restfully. When we move later this year back to the US I will get a diffuser for each bedroom so that I can focus on using the oils that best suits each of us. As with anything in life what works well for one of us doesn’t always work the same for another. Thankfully we haven’t had too many incompatibilities. As a matter of fact I am finding that the kids are wanting to explore more about what each of the oils do, and find the reach for them rather than others items when something is bothering them. It has been a beautiful experience. Recently my husband has discovered the benefits of essential oils as well, especially when it comes to headaches.
Here are a few recipes that I use in our house that are winners!
Morning Wake Up recipe: Homework/Work Focus:
3 drops On Guard 4 Peppermint
3 drops Wild Orange 4 Wild Orange
Sleepy Time recipe:
3 drops Serenity
3 drops Balance
3 drops Lavender Peace
These recipes are all created with doTERRA oils…they are my primary go to at the moment. Although here in Australia I have fallen in love with Perfect Potion essential oils as well, especially their Chakra blend. I have three happy, healthy and energetic teenagers, who have kept me on my toes since birth. What you may not know is that they actually enjoy hanging out with Mum and Dad. We are BLESSED. Very blessed and we thank the kids for their love every day and after spending 5 weeks traveling together I can safely say that we are stronger than ever as a family. Our first trip we traveled down to the Great Ocean Road, camping in the Otway National Forest before we crossed Bass Strait to Tasmania and camping in Cradle Mountain for a week. We used this time to hike, appreciate the gifts from Mama Earth and connect more as a family after having a very busy school year. It always amazes us how refreshed we all feel after camping, sleeping on the ground and enjoying the beautiful blessings of nature. Now, for some of you this kind of trip sounds way to crazy and out of the realm of possibilities in their life, however if you have kids, especially teenagers, this is a fun and easy way to really connect as a family. It just allows you to plug in with one another on a meaningful leave with little effort. A family that camps together, plays together creates an everlasting bond…
Bbbbbut, this isn’t about camping with teens.
It’s about MUST haves for a Happy, Healthy and Energetic Teenagers…
What has inspired me to share these thoughts was the observations and comments of so many strangers this summer, plus I have had several friends with teenagers ask me what my secret is for having such happy kids. To the point that 2 years ago one of my daughter’s teachers actually told us during a parent teacher conference that she is too happy and needs to learn to take life more seriously. It was ALL I could do not to laugh… I politely smiled and said “There is no such thing as being too happy… and there is plenty of time in life to be serious. Right now is a time for enjoying life.” She was not too impressed, but the Headmistress thought it was a great response, as she hid her smile from the teacher.
Why write about this now you may ask, well it is too easy and with it being the beginning of the school year why not share the wealth.
My first MUST have is Himalayan Salt Light…
Back in 2010 my girl friend gave me my first Himalayan Salt tea light candle holder and I haven’t looked back ever since. This was a really stressful time in our lives. My husband was deploying for 6 months, our youngest son was still recovering from a concussion that occurred early in the year and I felt like I was struggling to keep things together. And because life occurs other little things kept coming up that made just made me uneasy. Little did I realize that this one candle holder was going to have so much effect instantly. I remember dropping 3 candles in to my beautiful gift, lighting them and within minutes all the static energy that had filled my downstairs was GONE. The “white noise” was gone… WOW! If that was the only thing that happened I would have been thrilled, but what happened next made me a true believer in the power of Himalayan Salt.
My sons were playing the Xbox with a friend and as usual I felt the energy rising. The boys started getting louder and no matter how low I turned the volume of the system down it was just head splitting LOUD. So I decided to experiment with the salt candle. I moved it so it was in a safe place and in a central location. I lite the candles and noticed with minutes the entire house vibration shifting. Now this was ONE 3 light Himalayan Salt tea light candle holder. Just a quickly as the energy started to rise with the video game the boys began to settle down, sit down and the gleeful screaming turned into playful banter. My headache went away and I noticed that I actual started enjoying watching the boys play rather than feeling a need to run away. I experimented with this one tea light for a week before I brought more Himalayan Salt tea light candle holders to my house. I would get up early in the morning and light candles before the kids came down to get ready for school and that made our mornings soooooooooo peaceful. It reached a point that the kids noticed such a difference that if I hadn’t lite the candles by the time they came home in the afternoon they’d help replace the candles and light them for me. With the candles being such a hit I expanding our Himalayan Salt collection by purchasing lights for each of our bedrooms and the public rooms we spent the most time in.
The difference was amazing. The kids slept better, were more relaxed and responsive. When my husband came home he even noticed a more relaxed home environment. Our entire worlds changed with that one Himalayan Salt tea light holder. For me it is a MUST have! When we moved to Australia I sold all of mine in the US and replaced them with new ones here in Australia. When we move back this year I’ll do the same thing, the only difference is I know where to go in the US to purchase exactly what I need when I arrive.
If it speaks to you give it go…at worst it will not create any change in your family’s life. At best it will change your life forever!
Yes, salt lights weep and the salt melts. My solution is that I put tiles under all of my salt lights and wipe the tile weekly. Minimum mess…fantastic solution!
